Boating
Summer is gone now; fall is in full force. Weather-wise it has been cool, dry then rainy, now warm; autumn in all it’s colorful splendor. Boat wise – did you float? That is good. Did you take a few trips? That is great. The water was up and that was good. Gas was pretty stable in price and that too was good. So any day on the boat . . .
Now as fall settles in, if you are still in the water make some plans for a destination before it is time to winterize and cover your boat.
As you prepare your boat for the winter, doing all the mechanical work and winterization, examine your canvas and consider repairs that can be done this winter so that you need not rush this spring. This is a good time for us to do your canvas and your upholstery without rushing. Just give us a call at 313-598-6234.
Safety
Perhaps this is your year to take another boating safety class, perhaps again. Coast Guard Auxiliary: 586-783-2326 or Power Squadron: 586-468-1180. Taking a class also might give you a discount on your boat insurance. Did you have your boat examined this season? Now is the time to take stock of what repairs need to be done during the fall haul out. Since it takes a few months, perhaps now is the time to apply for your NEXUS card. This is documentation required for reentry into the U.S. from Canada. Go to www.nexus.gov or call 1-866-639-8726 for more information. There is an alternative – an enhanced driver’s license (check with the Secretary of State regarding this) or a passport (check with the post office).
Places To Go / Things To Do
Do some reading or dreaming this winter about places to go next spring and summer on your boat. Plan ahead for trips alone or with a group, read charts, ask other boaters about their experiences. Between the entrance to Lake Huron and the entrance to Lake Erie there is a lot of water to traverse and a lot of spots to dock and explore. Beyond the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair – Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Superior, Lake Ontario – the great lakes is what make our area a feast of places to go – to fish or to explore. Dream, think of trying someplace new and unfamiliar next season.
Don’t forget the winter Boat Show at Cobo Hall. That tells us that the season we love is fast approaching. Perhaps we will see you there.
